Gelati

Once while in Italy I was walking around Piazza delle Erbe and a man offered to buy me a gelato. I accepted, but we soon learned that our conversation could go no further than greetings, as he knew very little english, and I very little Italian. And so we sat on the steps of an old cathedral and ate our gelati in silence. There was something very poetic about that moment, something that makes me feel real. I think about this moment whenever I am feeling small and insignificant. It grounds me. To think that even though we couldn't communicate in a conventional way we were still connected. I like this about people, once all of the hustle and bustle of modern day life is stripped away we're all the same. We're all just wanting some company. Someone to sit with and just be.
